Another Deep brings the devastating effects of deep-sea mining to light in a way that is surprisingly pleasing to the eyes and ears. The installation transports visitors to the depths of the ocean near Svalbard, Norway. Here, the extraction of materials and minerals essential to modern technologies such as smartphones and electric vehicles is transforming entire ecosystems. And it is fuelling geopolitical tensions by attracting the interests of countries like Russia and China. Another Deep seeks to open our eyes to the environmental, social and political ripples of our capitalist consumerism and humanity's passion for extracting more and more from planet Earth.

The layered reality of deep-sea mining is presented in beautiful images and sounds: the haunting calls of belugas and sperm whales, the crackling of melting glaciers – both above and below the surface – and the deep vibrations of the ocean floor. These sounds, recorded with hydrophones and ultra-sensitive microphones during the Arctic Circle Residency Programme, are blended with images of the ocean floor, archival footage and microscopic images.

Don’t miss the premiere of the live performance version of Another Deep at Rewire Festival, 3 - 6 April.
