Ilda is not a humanoid robot, but a mechanical arm whose movements are fundamentally different from those of a human body. And yet, as we watch Ilda, we may feel the urge to mirror her movements and dance with her. We feel movement in our own body just by watching something else move; we feel a ‘kinesthetic empathy’. Ilda demonstrates that this empathy is not limited to human forms. Dance is a shared experience, regardless of the physical nature of the dancer. Ilda dances – and we dance with her. And even after you and the rest of humanity have died out, Ilda will still be dancing.
