Immersive technology as a driver of regional innovation
In a rapidly changing economy, technology plays a key role in preparing young people and professionals for the jobs of tomorrow. Immersive technologies—such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), 3D audio and haptic feedback—originated in the creative industries but are now increasingly used in sectors such as healthcare, education and industry. They are a powerful engine behind the digitalization wave and offer new opportunities for innovation, talent development and economic growth in the region.Â

The MRDH is investing €450.195 in the development of the Regional Innovation Hub for Immersive Technology in Rotterdam. With this investment, MRDH—together with municipalities, educational institutions and the business community—is taking an important step toward a better-qualified workforce and a stronger connection between education and the labor market.
Virtual skills trainingÂ
Immersive Experience Labs are driving the digital transition and will have a major impact on our daily lives, work, learning and leisure. They also offer a significant opportunity for the regional tech industry. For example, port workers can safely practice loading and unloading hazardous materials through virtual training in a simulated VR environment—without any risk to people or the environment. Technicians can use AR glasses to receive step-by-step instructions during machine maintenance, reducing errors and shortening training time. Students and pupils can also use immersive technology to practice and develop key skills.

Katoenhuis as a connecting force
Katoenhuis, located in Rotterdam’s Merwe-Vierhavens area (M4H), will serve as the heart of the regional Immersive Tech ecosystem for the next four years. It will be a central meeting place for educational institutions, companies, knowledge partners and governments active in the field of immersive technology. Together with educational partners (Erasmus University, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam), specialized Immersive Experience Labs (IX-labs) will be established here. These experimental spaces allow students and researchers to develop and test new applications, generating fresh knowledge and insights. Katoenhuis connects the network and takes on a central project role.
