Last month Katoenhuis supported artist Roos Janssen in the development of her new installation that will be presented at DGTL Festival.

Roos Janssen was selected by DGTL Academy and New Horizons – a talent program and art project supporting upcoming female artists in their journey of entering the music and arts scene, to create a striking art installation under the mentorship of renowned artist Heleen Blanken. Inspired by water and shifting reflections, the work plays with perception, blurring the line between the physical and the intangible.

The installation explores the gradual disappearance of material. As it evolves, the form softens, fragments, and ultimately dissolves into a refined beam of light. In this process of dissolution, a sense of stillness emerges, where materiality becomes a mere suggestion. Time seems to stretch, and the viewer becomes attuned to subtle transformations.

Inspired by the hypnotic qualities of water and the movement of light, the work draws the viewer into a trance-like state. Reflections shift and surfaces dissolve, inviting a deeper observation. The experience is both physical and meditative, offering a space where perception drifts and the line between material and immaterial begins to fade.

About the artist

Roos Janssen is a visual artist from Rotterdam, whose work centers on the magic of reflections within her surroundings. She explores how these reflections can serve as gateways to alternate universes, allowing the viewer to experience the world in new ways. Janssen captures videos of reflective surfaces, ranging from ripples in water to light patterns that emerge in her surroundings. Through her use of analog materials to break and bend light, Janssen creates immersive experiences that invite the mind to drift. Often created for nightlife settings, these installations explore the dynamic conversation between image and sound, as they come together to form a compelling, immersive experience.
