Artists are increasingly using the large Katoenhuis halls to test their immersive artworks.
Recently, community member Zalán Szakács tested his work "TOPIA" on site.
TOPIA (2020) is a light installation inspired by Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti’s ideas on perspective. It acts as a modern take on cinematic screens, set within a stage-like space, combining sculptural elements with a tactile feel.
Szakács’ work reflects on the evolving concept of the screen throughout history. Once architectural, screens today serve as digital windows. The curtain-like quality of the light wall highlights the flatness of the ‘screen,’ echoing the familiar surface of LED displays.
